The Braun RT20 radio, designed by Dieter Rams in 1961, is a landmark of mid-century industrial design. Rams was just 29 when he created it for the West German manufacturer Braun AG, and it was the company’s last tabletop radio. The RT20 embodies Rams’ famous maxim, “Less, but better” – a beechwood veneer cabinet with a powder-coated steel fascia that slants gently upwards, improving both the legibility of the controls and the projection of sound into the room. Its restrained layout, with circular knobs arranged in vertical and horizontal rows and the speaker concealed behind a circular slotted grille, reconciles circles with rectilinear form in a way that still feels strikingly modern. The RT20 is held in the permanent collections of the V&A and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and Rams’ influence continues to shape contemporary product design, from Jasper Morrison to Jonathan Ive.
